Soul Sustenance (Jamie Bonjour)
Inspired by and written from the perspective of my father.
Oh the joy of nourishing the mind
Hours upon hours of reading,
Straining to grasp even the table scraps
Of the great scholars and theologians
To catch a nugget of truth
Concealed in stuffed paragraphs
Dripping with poetry and saturated with reason,
Head pounding, I stare unblinking
decrypting the scribbles of Blaise Pascal
To define infinity while drowning in the finite,
Or stumble away from an hour
Of proving the Reason for God
Dear Wormwood receives his instructions
Still, I attempt to follow C. S. Lewis
Into a realm of Mere Christianity
And for just a moment
I see the gears, clinking and clanging
Behind this sage world
Worn and rusty but like any old machine
Built to run forever
A metronomic melody beating
Through the chaos I once believed in
As I return to the page last touched
The mundane, defeating world falls away
Bottom-shelf comprehension gives way
To cravings for soul sustenance
Each book, page, sentence
Exposing how little I actually know
Meet the Poet! Jamie Bonjour is an entrepreneur and pretzel maker by day and a poet/author by night. She's excited to see how all of that goes.
