Last June (Anna Lachelt)
Tell me what the lilacs smelled like
Last June when I was not there.
Was it the scent that reels you back
Into playful childhood evenings
When life was carefree and anything
Was possible, when you were small
And the world was wide around you?
Were there fireworks in the night
Raining glitter over the lake?
I remember the fair days down
beside the lake with the bonfires
And stargazing and stupid pranks.
Did Scott Henton kiss Lily Drake
Beneath the stars? Did Tom and Dan
Get caught stealing firecrackers,
Or did they finally succeed?
I miss the way sunflowers danced
And spun to face the sun. But you
Always loved summer nights the best.
I hope you found someone to kiss,
To spin you round the campfire,
Last June because I was not there.
Meet the Poet!
Anna Lachelt has long been a lover of the written word, thanks to her parents who started reading to her from an early age. She began to write for herself when she was in 6th and 7th grade. It wasn't until university that she unlocked her love of writing poetry through one of her professors. She most enjoys writing fictional poems, sometimes based on characters she's written about herself, sometimes based on those made up in the moment. While it's been awhile since she's had the time to write poetry, she looks forward to beginning again.
